Enter a Knitter, Exit a Fiber Artist: From Craft to Art

Thinking outside the fiber box.  Steven encourages you to express yourself like never before. There are no rules, no mistakes, only variations. We will explore a variety of fiber techniques in this class; knit, crochet, felting, weaving and more. Exciting combinations of these techniques allow us to discover the fusion where crafting converges with art. Students are encouraged to experiment and express themselves through a variety of freeform techniques. Projects range from wearables to wall art, sculpture to runway and beyond.  Your personal treasure chest of trinkets, baubles, fibers and beads can be used. The usual constricting pattern lines will be blurred and the outcome is a one-of –a-kind masterpiece. Techniques employed are knitting, crocheting, embroidery, weaving, along with both wet and needle felting Skill Level: Basic to advanced knit, crochet and felting skills needed, or any combination of these with a deep desire to create. How to knit and crochet will not be taught.

Students should bring to class:

Supplies Needed:

  1. a  pre-done base of knit, felt, or woven. This can be a 2ft square to several yards if a garment is desired.
  2. Needle felting tools (multi needle head, single needles, pad or foam)
  3. Artfelt paper and plastic
  4. A variety of interesting and character infused yarns, fibers and roving.
  5. Your personal collection of beads, trinkets, baubles, charms and collectables to incorporate in your fiber art. Memorabilia and keepsakes are especially encouraged.
  6. 24 to 30 gauge wire to knit, crochet and embroider with. Jewelry wire and/or Habu type yarns are suggested.
  7. A variety of crochet hooks, yarn darning needles, sewing needles, knitting needles. Small jewelry tools like pliers and scissor

Homework: 1. A “Prefelt” purchased or self created. Artfelt is a great technique for this. Can be knit, crochet, woven or up-cyled/reclaimed piece of fiber. This main piece should emulate the approximate size of your finished project. It can also be a combination of smaller shapes and sizes. 2. Several free-form pcs ready made. Give thought to your eventual desired result. Would you like to create a     garment, wall hanging, sculpture, etc. and plan your creation’s size and content accordingly. Sketching and tear sheets are strongly encouraged.
