Jewelry lovers will delight in making larger versions, called “wall jewelry,” of the necklaces I design. Most finished wall pieces measure between 10 and 14 inches and are intended for display on the wall as pieces of art. We’ll be using vintage hardware as well as photos, baubles, chains, and other found elements. I’ll include my tips and techniques for working with metal and found objects.
Students should bring to class:
• Medium to large vintage black-and-white photographs and/or tintypes
• Old books or pages from old books containing inspiring words and black-and-white illustrations (I love ones from the turn of the last century)
• Buckles and hardware bits made of Lucite, plastic, shell, Bakelite, or metal
• Metal or plastic baubles (to be drilled and added to the bottom of the piece as a dangle; I love keys, game pieces, costume jewelry bits, and foreign coins)
• Dremel drill (may be cordless)
• Attachments for Dremel drill: 1/16-inch bits, mandrel #402, heavy-duty cutoff wheels, sanding drum mandrel with extra sanding bands
• Safety goggles
• Thin cardboard
• Several packages of 2-part gel epoxy (I use Loctite brand)
• Spring-loaded center punch
• Scissors
• Fine-tip Micron pen in black, .20 pigma, size 005
• Round-nosed pliers
• Flat-nosed pliers
• Flush-cut pliers (only if you already have a pair!)
• Small hammer
• Fine #0000 steel wool pads
• Heavy-duty book or paper awl
• Ruler and/or tape measure
• 2 small bar clamps
• Small vise (only if you already have one!)
Additional materials provided at class:
• Three vintage hardware/structural pieces from my collection
• Vintage chain
Additional materials fee: $20.00
