Smart Bar Team Leader Susan Mernit is the founder of Oakland Local ( oaklandlocal.com), a news and community hub for Oakland, California, focused on environmental, food, development, and social justice issues. She is the recipient of a 2009 New Voices grant from J-Lab at American University. She is also a consultant and trainer.
A former VP at AOL and Netscape and a former Yahoo senior director, Susan was the consulting program manager for The Knight News Challenge ( newschallenge.org) in 2008–2009, as well as a consultant to organizations including Salon.com and TechSoup Global, where she led the redesign of their portal. Amy Gahran is a journalist, editor, entrepreneur, and all-around digital media geek. She’s written and taught for the Poynter Institute, the Knight Digital Media Center at USC, the Society of Environmental Journalists, and elsewhere. Along with her business partner Adam Glenn she manages the Reynolds Journalism Institute Collaboratory community. Lisa Williams is the CEO & founder of Placeblogger.com, the world’s largest searchable index of local weblogs. Mary Andrews, Etsy.com’s lead merchandising specialist, contributes to the site’s curation across daily shopping emails, blog articles, trend guides and media partnerships. She authors regular series including Etsy’s weekly Quit Your Day Job seller features, Etsy’s monthly Merchandising Tips for sellers, and a weekly trends post for Kaboodle.com which highlights insider tips and innovative Etsy designs. Mary holds a BFA in Craft and Materials studies from Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts and began her journey with Etsy as a jewelry designer and shop owner. In her free time, you may find her at the local farmer’s market, antique shop, or experimenting with new jewelry designs.
Susanne Woods has been in illustrated book publishing in New York and London for over 10 years and is currently the Acquisitions Editor for both C&T Publishing and for their new imprint, Stash Books. Susanne is responsible for acquiring over 50 books per year for both imprints and is the voice of the Stashbooks.com weblog. She currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area where she also opened a boutique furniture consignment store (www.chameleonconsignment.com) in 2005, raises her two young boys and is currently working towards her post graduate degree in Interior Design.
